OndoReporter | Lagos starts Lekki Gardens buildings Structural Stability Test

Lagos State Government yesterday
commenced Structural Stability Test on
existing structures in Lekki Gardens in Eti-Osa
Local Government, to ascertain the strength of
the buildings.

This came nine days after a five-storey
building under construction caved in, killing 34
persons and injuring 13 others.

When Vanguard visited the scene, officials of
the Lagos state Material Testing Laboratory,
LSMTL, were sighted conducting test on the
buildings.

Speaking to newsmen at the scene of the
collapsed building, Mr Rasheed Balogun, an
engineer and Acting General Manager of
LSMTL, said that the agency has commenced
the test to avert another building collapse in
the state.

Governor, Akinwunmi Ambode, had on Tuesday
directed that test be conducted on the
structures and that the result will determine
the fate of the structures.

Balogun explained that some of the test
conducted were on the Structures Wire Pile
test, Coring test, Non Destructive test, Pundit
test and Soil test on the structures.

Vanguard however gathered that the residents
have compiled with the directive of the state
government to vacate the building until the
completion of the tests.

It was learned that Police officers from the Eti-
Osa division and Rapid Response Squad, RRS,
operatives, were at the entrance of the sealed
building to ensure no one had access to the
buildings.

Sources said that additional private security
officers have been deployed to the Lekki
Garden Worldwide, owners of the structures to
maintain strict adherence to the no entrance
order especially for non-occupants.

In an interview with Vanguard , a security
official who identified himself simply as
Olumide, said that since the Lagos State
Safety Commission, LSSC and the State
Building Control Agency, LASBCA, sealed the
buildings, residents of the estate have not
been allowed to stay there except when they
came to take one or two things from their
apartment.
