Newcastle keeper Martin Dubravka (left) was wrong-footed by the deflection off Jose Izquierdo's shot

Newcastle slipped to the bottom of the Premier League with a defeat by Brighton, whose striker Glenn Murray was taken off after a sickening aerial collision.

The 35-year-old came off worse as he competed for the ball with Magpies' Federico Fernandez in the ninth minute. The Seagulls' leading scorer this season appeared to swallow his tongue as he landed, and he was taken off on a stretcher after six minutes of on-pitch treatment.

Brighton later stated that the forward was awake in hospital and had been taken for precautionary scans.

Instead of being thrown off their stride, the Seagulls regrouped quickly and took the lead when Beram Kayal deflected in Jose Izquierdo's strike in the 29th minute.

It was one of Brighton's few forays into the Newcastle box in a match where they spent most of the time defending.

The Magpies produced 27 shots on goal, but only managed six on target. Midfielder Jonjo Shelvey went closest to scoring - first with a strike that was superbly blocked by Ryan, then with a free-kick that was saved by the Australian, with the help of the intervention from his defence wall.

The result means Newcastle are the fourth team in top-flight history to lose their first five home games - an unwelcome statistic for manager Rafael Benitez who must now be feeling the pressure.
